SCOPE AND MOTIVATION

The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is considered as the key enabler for intelligent manufacturing, through connecting massive industrial devices for manufacturing data collection and analysis. These devices generate massive amounts of data featured with complex heterogeneity and low value density, bringing great pressure to the current communication system. Semantic communication, which is a content-aware and task-oriented intelligent communication paradigm, is regarded as the feasible solution to this challenge. Semantic communication can extract semantic features from source data to eliminate redundancy, therefore significantly reduces the amount of data to be transmitted. It just fits the IIoT as the essence of IIoT is to analyze and control the manufacturing process, wherein only the semantic features of data is in fact needed. Despite significant efforts have been made recently in the area of semantic communications, there are still many challenges especially in the context of IIoT, such as semantic information theory, semantic representation for IIoT, semantic feature coding, resource management, security issues and so on.

To address the above challenges, this workshop aims at bringing together researchers from academia and industry to discuss recent breakthroughs and novel applications related to semantic communications for IIoT.
